Leveled Lidice

The Once and Current Town of Lidice

We had happened upon mention of Lidice in connection to Terezin in a brochure we picked up in Prague.

Our drive from Terezin to Lidice took us through beautiful rolling hills of the Czech countryside.

This non-Jewish town was burnt and then bombed by the Nazis in retaliation for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. Its residents, including women and children, were sent to camps and very few survived. We surmise that the Nazis picked a town relatively close to Prague to scare the Czech population since Heydrich had been killed by Czechs sent undercover from Britain. After the war the Czech government rebuilt the town and created the memorial /museum which is also very well done.
