Portrait of the Day

Week Four

April 2, In Siena, our southern-most point, we climbed the tower (more than 300 steps):

April 3, In Ferrara, we walked through the few streets of the ghetto and found an odd combination of the "Balebuste" restaurant in Piazzeta Lampronti:

April 4, In Villach (Austria; just over the border from Italy), we walked from our campsite about three kilometers to an area we saw on our drive in: Judendorf:

April 5, Still in Villach we took care of some correspondence updated the Web site took the waters at Kurzentrum Thermalbad Warmbad Villach, which turned out not as warm as we expected (note the mosses growing from around the fountain:

April 6, On our approach to Vienna, we took a short detour to Eisenstadt. We had read that twenty percent of the population was Jewish before the war. Now, there is a decrepit, cemetery a plaque on the wall of the building where the synagogue had been before it was burnt on Kristalnacht, and a Jewish museum that does not open until May (just our luck!). And we learned that this was the town of Esterhazy and Haydn. Here we are in the prince's "backyard" which overlooks the town and a lovely valley:

April 7, On our first full day in Vienna we participated in a walking tour of Jewish Vienna. The tour ended at this intersection. The four pillars behind us indicate the location of pillars of the synagogue that was destroyed on Kristalnacht. On either side of that space are buildings related to the story, but, described in further detail in the general report on Vienna:
