Portrait of the Day

Week Five

April 9, Exploring Vienna, on the way into the downtown area we took a walk up to the top of the hill overlooking the Schloss Schonbrunn (the summer court of the Hapsburgs):

April 10, After finding the marriage record of Debbie's maternal grandparents at the Jewish records office of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien we were told we could find phone books of of the period after they had moved back to Vienna during the Nazi period at the Rathhaus, in front of which we stood for this day's photo [Wow, that sentence sounds like it was written in German!]:

April 11, We awoke to a lot of rain. However, by the time we left that had pretty much stopped. We went to the address where Debbie's grandparents lived (an apartment building) before they got married, then to the Belvedere to see Klimpt and Schiele. In the afternoon we took a long break over coffee at Oberaaer Konditerei where we had this photo taken:

April 12, We cleaned the van for Passover and then went into town. We had a wonderful Seder (and a delicious meal with David and Angelika Kisser-Ma'ayan:

April 13, Inversions. Last night we celebrated our liberation from slavery in Egypt (with lovely people in Vienna). This evening (after driving all day (and some of last night)) we arrived at Auschwitz:

April 14, No photo today
[sorry]

April 15, After a lovely day of Shabbat services, study and socializing we took a walk to Wilanow with Rabbi Sidney Schwarz, his wife Sandy and daughter Jen and (member of Beit Warszawa) Emil Jezowski where we took our picture in front of the Polish royalty's summer residence:
