Rashi is not in Troyes!

...though he was born there, taught there (from the age of 25) and died there.

There is an institute named for him and Jews now maintain a synagogue there.

It is interesting to note that, while the 900th anniversary of Rashi's death was marked by significant events in Troyes in 2005, the people who work in the local downtown official tourist office were not aware of Rashi's role in the city.

Across the street from the Rashi Institute is the current Troyes synagogue. There is nothing to see about Rashi himself in Troyes. We'll return to Rashi when we get to Speyer Worms and Mainz.

The text above the door reads: "Open for me the gates of righteousness, I will praise God and enter them."

The plaque at the entrance to the synagogue commemorates the victims of anti-semitism.

As we left Troyes for our campsite, we saw a sculpture of a large black and white ball with the Hebrew letter Shin.

A. B. Yehoshua's beautiful novel: A Journey to the End of the Millenium, has been a great read for France.
