Week Six
April 16, We went into downtown Warsaw to explore. After parking across the street from the Umshalgplatz monument, we followed the small black granite monuments to the Mila 18 bunker monument, then to the monument for Szmul Zygelbojm; from there we could see the park of the Martyrs' monument on Mordecaja Anielewicza street. Our trek took us along that street to the intersection with Jana Pawla II (John Paul II) street, which led us to a small area where a bit of the Ghetto wall remains. After returning to our van, we drove off to the location of our "portrait" (a little town on the way to Gdansk that has some buildings that are reminiscent of what a pre-war shtetl might have been like (one of our friends at Beit Warschawa suggested we look at it):
April 17, Exploring Gdansk, walking the streets of Old Town along the river and looking at lots of amber:
April 18, After spending most of the day dealing with tasks of living, we finally found the streets on which Debbie's father had lived. At only one address does the original building still stand. Here we are at the approximate address on one of those streets:
April 19, We had a lovely, sunny day, perfect for a cleansing walk along the promenade of Sopot before driving out to our "campsite" somewhere in northwestern Poland:
April 20, On arriving in Germany we took a short break from driving the Autobahn, in a beautiful wooded area near Joachimstadt:
April 21, We took the bus into Berlin and walked through the Tiergarten on our way to visit the Neue Synagoge. Along the way we encountered this memorial to the Jews of Europe that is at the intersection of Ebertstrasse and Hannah-Arendt Strasse:
April 22, Following services at the Pestalozzistrasse synagogue, where the cantor and the choir perform the service using the music of Lewandowski, we went to the Jewish Museum and spent many hours exploring the displays:
