ISRAEL TOUR December 25, 1996 - January 5, 1997

Temple Adat Shalom Congregational tour hosted by Rabbi Deborah R. Prinz and Rabbi Mark Hurvitz

Thursday, December 26

Dawn happened somewhere over the Atlantic. We were all pretty much asleep (or at least we wanted to be). We'd watched the same three or four movies at least twice.

When we arrived at Ben Gurion Airport we learned that the Histadrut, Israel's umbrella labor union, had called a strike and targeted the airport.

That is not us in the photo on the front page of the Jerusalem Post!

I felt it was a bit odd to think that the strike was considered more important news than Arafat's expectation that a deal on Hebron will be settled by Tuesday.

While many flights had been canceled, we were lucky. We were up in the air before the strike started. There was not much they could do to us other than just not unload the baggage from the plane. So, after we had been up and traveling for over twenty hours, we waited another two till our plane was unloaded.

We met our guide Tzivka and drove up to Jerusalem.

As we turned on the winding mountain road that brought us in view of the city, with the full moon raising above it, we stopped to say the Shehecheyanu and have a glass of wine and sing some songs about Jerusalem in honor of the occasion.
