ISRAEL TOUR July 19 - August 2, 1999

Temple Adat Shalom Congregational tour hosted by Rabbi Deborah R. Prinz and Rabbi Mark Hurvitz and guided by Walter Zanger

Jerusalem (II): Walk Jewish Quarter; Afternoon at the Shrine of the Book (housing the Dead Sea Scrolls) and the Israel Museum. Overnight in Jerusalem.

Karen Friedenberg reported on the day

Little children danced circles around you. They distracted you and quickly a small hand enters your pocket searching for the tiny gold coin it desired. Pickpockets were one of the many experiences inside the walls of the old city. Besides the small thieves were the quarters. The Jewish quarter blended with the Christian quarter through one building. On the top floor of the building, the last supper supposedly had taken place. Below it, lay King David's tomb. Those two events tied the Jews and Christians together. Also the ancient old city stones were a tender, dark brown, while the new old city stones were lighter. The gate which separated the old and new city, Jaffa Gate was intellectually build. First, there were holes in the wall in which soldiers inside could shoot from and not get shot. Also the gate was shaped like an "L" making it challenging for an army of charging intruders to get inside. Then there was the Western Wall. Words cannot describe the wonderful, Jewish sensation I felt while seeing, touching and praying next to the powerful wall. Who knew that a wall could have so much meaning to so many people. After that we roamed the Cardo and shopped the many stores searching for the perfect gift. Next came the Israel Museum. The Dead Sea Scrolls sat in one room of the museum and were very interesting. Before I came to Israel people said "Wait till Jerusalem." Now that I'm here, I feel more connected to my religion and people. And I feel at home. Israel, my homeland.
