Caesarea (facing east or facing west); Megiddo (the Land Bridge between Asia and Africa); Atlit (Aliyah Bet) (Crusader Fortress). Overnight in Haifa.
We began our 2nd full day in Israel dark and early, way before the sun came up. Jet lag is not kind to travelers. After watching CNN repeatedly, we were more than happy to enter the restaurant dining hall as it opened at 6:30. Once full of strange cheeses, fresh vegetables, olives, and cheesecake we met in the lobby to shelp our luggage on to the bus.
First thing in the morning we rode our bus out to Caesarea and saw the magnificent ancient port city built by the insane King Herod. We learned that there would never be enough money to ever uncover all of the amazing ruins of that city, or the rest of Israel. What a shame. [We then went on to explore the wonderful and beautiful aqueducts that brought water to the city.]
Then we boarded the bus and moved inland to Tel Megiddo. There we learned of the wonders of Israel's history, where civilization after civilization pile up, one after the next. At Megiddo we explored the enormous and amazing water system developed by King Ahab, and had a bite to eat.
From Megiddo we drove to the coast of the Mediterranean Sea at Atlit, where we learned about the illegal immigration by sea during the British Mandate, Aliyah Bet. We saw the barracks of the deportee's camps, which were nearly identical to those at concentration camps throughout Europe.
From Atlit we drove up the coast to the Carmel and entered Haifa, where we all spent our night.
