Thursday July 22, 1999 Atlit Deportee Camp

ISRAEL TOUR July 19 - August 2, 1999

Temple Adat Shalom Congregational tour hosted by Rabbi Deborah R. Prinz and Rabbi Mark Hurvitz and guided by Walter Zanger

Caesarea (facing east or facing west); Megiddo (the Land Bridge between Asia and Africa); Atlit (Aliyah Bet) (Crusader Fortress). Overnight in Haifa.

Nama takes us around the Atlit camp for deportees.

The camp looks identical to any concentration camp in Europe during the Sho'a. However, this was built by the British to hold Jews who had run from Europe and gotten to the shores of Eretz Yisrael only to be captured and held because of British policies.

Nama, our guide, separated the men from the women before sending them in to the shower and disinfectant rooms.

In the barracks, the prisoners carved names and other messages on the walls in attempts to make contact with other Sho'a survivors
